Q:  What causes abnormal hair loss?
A:  First of all, if you are experiencing abnormal hair loss, it is important to contact your physician. If you are experiencing hair breakage, you should consult with your hair care professional. There are several causes for hair loss:
1. Genetic Factors. Your genes determine how your hair will grow. You can inherit hair loss from either side of your family.
2. Nutritional Factors: Your diet and nutrient intake can greatly affect your hair. If you are deficient in certain nutrients and minerals, or if you have recently lost weight, you are more susceptible to hair loss. It is important to see your physician to determine any medical cause for hair loss.
3. Stress Factors: Stress and trauma can constrict blood supply to the capillaries, which can then result in lack of oxygen and nutrients to your hair supply.
4. Environmental Factors: Air pollutants, water pollution, chlorine, metals, sun exposure and chemical hair treatments are all factors that can affect hair growth.
5. Medications: The side effects of some drugs can cause hair loss. Steroids, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy as well as many blood pressure, diabetic and even acne medications can all cause hair loss. It is best to consult your physician to get more information on the side effects of any medication you are taking.
6. Health: An untreated thyroid gland problem can cause hair loss, as can some medications used to treat hyperthyroidism. If you have reason to suspect your hair loss is related to thyroid disease, consult your physician for a blood test. Menopause and other hormonal changes in the body can also account for hair loss.
7. Hair Treatment: Rigorous hair brushing, rough scalp treatment and styling hair too tightly can cause both hair loss and hair breakage. Poor scalp hygiene and chemical treatments can also affect hair growth.
